History
The School
of Industrial Instruction was founded in 1912 as the first industrial school in
the country. In 1948, the school was upgraded to Provincial Taipei Institute of
Technology and a five-year electrical engineering program was set up. The three-year
and two-year Electronic Engineering and Refrigerating Air-Conditioning
Engineering programs came to existence later on. In August 1994, the school was
upgraded to National Taipei Institute of Technology, and the department
officially renamed as Department of Electrical Engineering Technology.
The school acquired its official name National Taipei University of Technology
in 1997. The department was renamed to Department of Electrical Engineering and
established the graduate program for Computer Communication and Control (3C)
with the department of Electronic Engineering. The departmental graduate school
set up the master program and the Ph.D. program in 1998 and 2003, respectively.
On August 1st, 2006, came the establishment of The College of Electrical
Engineering and Computer Science, under which the department became listed.
The
Department of Electrical Engineering now consists of 12 classes of full-time
undergraduate students, and the department also offers full-time master and
Ph.D. programs and part-time master program. Additionally, there’s also an
Industrial Technology Master Program, which is aimed specifically for
professional advancement. As the biggest department of the university, the
number of students we have make up one-ninth of the entire student body.
Educational
Objectives
This
department aims to develop specialized knowledge and to cultivate specialists
in electrical engineering to meet the need of industry. Diversified courses of
Electrical Engineering with as much emphasis on theory as on practice are
provided to develop students' skills in designs, manufacturing, maintenance and
applications. Graduates from this department are expected to apply their
professional skills and inspire research creativity. The department emphasizes on
the importance of cultivating professional ethics as well as the attitude and
ability for cross-field teamwork.
Faculty
There are
two major disciplines of study in the department: ‘Power’ and ‘System’. Power
could be further subcategorized into two areas: ‘Power and Energy’ and ‘Power
Electronics’. ‘Control Systems’, ‘Communications’ and ‘Computer Systems’ are
the three subcategories that make up the Systems field. The faculty members are
with the corresponding branches of study, according to their professional
strengths and interest of research. The department is active in recruiting
professionals for the advancement of our students and to achieve our
educational objectives.
Curriculum
Students
must acquire a minimum of 133 credits before they graduate. These should
include 33 common required credits, 54 specialized required credits, and 46
specialized elective credits. There is a committee of 14 people responsible for
the planning of the course modules and to make sure that they reflect the need
of the industry and serve the educational objectives in order to promote the
students’ core abilities. This department values highly the students’ practical
and theoretical abilities, thus the five branches of study all have their
required lectures as well as experiment courses. There are also
cross-discipline courses to train their ability in practical teamwork. During
recent years, the graduates of this department have become top five on the
industry favorites list in Taiwan.
Space and
Equipment
The
Department of Electrical Engineering is located on the second to sixth floor of
Complex Building and takes up a total of 4883 square meters. The space includes
3 conference rooms, 7 laboratories, and 31 research offices. All teachers and
full-time postgraduate students have their individual offices. During the past
five years, the department has received a great number of equipment either
from Ministry of Education projects and the industry in the form of donations.
These high quality equipment make up our fine laboratories, which guarantees
the great practical abilities students acquired from training in them.
Alumni
Graduates
from this department have excelled in various fields of the industry and
academia. Their superb performance in the professional world is an embodiment
of our school motto: ‘Honesty, Sincerity, Proficiency, Dedication’. The Alumni
Society, since its establishment in 2001, under the leadership from the first
Chairman Mr. Jin-Tai Yeh to Mr. Chin-Chia Hsu currently, has made much
contribution to the department.
Financial aid and life on campus
High school
graduate students who enroll in the university and have scored 65 or higher on
the General Scholastic Ability Test would receive, over four years, a total of
200 thousand NT dollars. Students from four-year technical programs with high
academic marks, either in electronic or electrical engineering fields could
receive an ‘Outstanding Studentship’ of 50 to 70 thousand NT dollars. Students
can apply for dozens of grants with the department and hundreds more with the
university. There are many clubs and societies in the university holding
interesting activities. The newly refurbished school dormitory is high quality
and under fine management. Additionally, the department also offers evening
enhancement classes, which started three years ago. The department hires TAs from
a range of fifteen to twenty various subjects to help students strengthen their
academic weaknesses after school. Most of our postgraduate students receive TA and RA scholarship, which is
enough to cover their living expenses. That allows them to focus on their
research and not having any financial worries.

In addition
to the traditional strength of electrical engineering, the department also
offers professional training in four areas relating to cutting-edge technology
industry: power electronics, control systems, communication systems, and
computer engineering. Those interested to excel in the field should not be
deterred by stereotype impressions of the department.
The fine practical skills found on the basis of well-studied theoretic disciplines
have lead the department of Electrical Engineering to many victories in
numerous national competitions.
Honors and Vision
With the
belief in ‘manage and discipline’ and courses carefully planned by the
Department of Electrical Engineering, our students performed well in
both theoretic and practical sides of the field. We have received high marks in
the IEET evaluation and the result is extraordinary, considering the
postgraduate school has only been founded two decades ago. With determination and
resolution, students and faculty of this department are to achieve much more
greatness in the future.
